Black Friday is right around the corner and everyone is gearing up for the sales event of the year. Brick-and-mortar retail shops as well as their online counterparts are loaded with crazy sales. Shoppers are awaiting this day with great anticipation so they can grab the best deals on tons of stuff, from clothing to small kitchen appliances and everything in between. Even snus is on the menu!
What is Black Friday in History?
Black Friday, the Friday after Thanksgiving, once was an American phenomenon until Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, hopped on the Black Friday bandwagon in 2010 and spread the knowledge of this historical annual event across the whole retail world.
Why historical? Well, because before it became the biggest annual sales event and was seen in a positive light, Black Friday had quite a different meaning with a negative undertone.
“The term dates back to the early 1950s when police officers in Philadelphia began to use the phrase “Black Friday” to describe the chaos that resulted after Thanksgiving, when large numbers of suburban tourists came into the city to begin their holiday shopping and watch the Army-Navy football game.” explains Rajeev Nar from RVS Media.
There are also other meanings to the term Black Friday, however, Amazon literally exploded the concept by allowing online shoppers to access incredible sales from any place on that day.
Since Black Friday has become the greatest shopping day of the year, and no longer a dreadful day, it is actually highly anticipated and happily awaited by all people.
Black Friday – Not Only A Mall Thing Anymore
In the past, people would be able to take advantage of Black Friday deals only in the US and only by going to physical locations such as shopping malls.
News channels would send their anchor people to catch a glimpse of the action as shoppers would be lining up and waiting for the doors to open, so they could run in and grab whatever deals they can get their hands on.
This year, while FIFA is kicking off the 2022 Worldcup football championship season, stores everywhere are kicking off the holiday shopping season with Black Friday, as they do every year, in an attempt to increase their sales and jolt shoppers into holiday shopping mode.
Black Friday is the official holiday shopping season opener with the biggest brands setting their best sales on that day.
Black Friday sales are normally big ticket items like TVs, iPhones and other expensive appliances or electronics.
Smart shoppers tend to wait it out until Black Friday comes around to get the best deals on the big stuff, and it really pays off!
Smaller ticket items however tend to get their prices knocked off on the Monday following Black Friday called Cyber Monday, a day where online shops exclusively play copycat to brick-and-mortar retail shops’ Black Friday.
