Over 80 chemicals, known as cannabinoids, have been found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most famous ingredient in cannabis. But CBD is obtained from hemp, a form of the Cannabis sativa plant that only contains small amounts of THC. CBD seems to have effects on some chemicals in the brain, but these are different than the effects of THC.

Is CBD Legal ?

Though prohibited and/or restricted substances are at the discretion of the customs authority in every country, CBD has been widely accepted across the globe as a therapeutic substance devoid of any psychotropic effects, meaning any “high” or altered state of consciousness that may be associated with the use of cannabis.

Isolate CBD contains strictly cannabidiol as a derivative of the cannabis plant while  broad spectrum CBD contains cannabidiol and other derivatives as well.  Furthermore, full spectrum CBD contains the widest array of cannabis derivatives including THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, but is also believed to be the most effective in the treatment of a wide range of health ailments and other issues.

Essentially, THC is the “problematic” ingredient in CBD in regards to whether the CBD is legal.  CBD containing a THC concentration of 0.2% is widely accepted as legal, with some countries even allowing 0.6% or more, and up to 1% THC.

Will CBD get me “high” ?

Because CBD is a derivative of the cannabis plant, associated with the psychoactive drugs Marijuana and Hashish, some people may be concerned about using CBD without getting “high”.

Research suggests that the range between 0-5% THC is considered a low THC level and is very unlikely to cause a “high”.  In addition, Dutch Passion, a seed company in Amsterdam, claims that “the average THC levels of the most popular cannabis seed varieties bought in Dutch coffee shops is 14.6%” and that “Usually, the very finest quality cannabis you will see is in the range 25%-30% THC. In the real world, any cannabis strain with over 20% THC should be considered very strong”.

We can agree that the levels of THC in CBD are nowhere near these levels and that in essence, a THC of 0.2% is quite negligible and will not get you “high” but it will give you all the benefits associated with full spectrum CBD.

What is the difference between CBD and THC ?

There are hundreds of chemical compounds in cannabis however, CBD and THC are the key compounds that are present in the cannabis plant.  In short CBD will not get you “high” while THC will.

In addition, the two have different medical uses: CBD has been shown to treat many medical ailments such as anxiety, mood disorders, joint pain, inflammation, epilepsy and other disorders such as insomnia and more with little to no side effects.  On the other hand, THC is less accepted for medical use, because of the “high” it causes.  However, research has shown that it can be used in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and to alleviate the pain associated with MS (Multiple Sclerosis). THC, like CBD, can also be used for the treatment of anxiety but since the psychoactive state it provokes can also be a trigger for anxiety and paranoia, its use may be contradictory.
